Can I lose weight at 50 years old?

Alright, we are starting Aug 19th at 274lbs. Goal is to drop to 250 by the time my Alta golf trip comes in 5 weeks. Target is 230lbs, but short term is 5 weeks and 250lbs. Plan is lots of green smoothies, keto mostly food/diet (but focused on lots of veggies and REAL food) with no fast food and no drinking.

RULES

No Drinking: I was trying to fool myself by looking at white claws as ‘low carb’…they certainly are, compared to beer. But when I’m drinking 10 of them a night (and sometimes more), it’s 1000+ useless calories a day. And dieting isn’t going to make up for that many wasted calories. So no drinking for 5 weeks. Plus it’s always good to take at least a break, and I drink a lot more than I like to admit.

No Fast Food: Not eating fast food isn’t easy for me. It is super cheap and fast and yeah, it can be delicious. But I’m going out for 2 meals daily and not good meals, mostly garbage fast food. I was also not cooking at home at all. I’d just stop and grab a pizza 2 or 3 times a week (sheesh, I’m really curious how I got to 274lbs

Walking Daily: Walking at least 20 min’s a day. My joints and back are taking too much strain with all this extra weight. Walking is low to no impact and when I’m just starting a diet at 50, I’m taking low impact thank you very much  Saw a video that said even getting 3500 steps a day started showing beneficial health signs. So I got a pedometer, shooting for daily 5000 steps. This is a reasonable and achievable goal.

Cook at Home: My first thoughts were “figure out some recipes” and I went through YouTube to find keto and low carb food. Recipes with veggies and healthy overall, but still tasty. Remember, you can eat things like cream cheese on low carb. I’ve got a couple favorites already that are like 5 ingredients and amazing tasting. Tons of recipes for stuff like cottage cheese flatbread or almond flour waffles (I used these to replace my breakfast McGriddle obsession) and more. I highly recommend the cream cheese with broccoli and jalapenos and sausage that’s keto but delicious.

Green Smoothie everyday: I do have a great Ninja blender. And green smoothies are a big part of the plan. They clean out your system, it’s great for your energy and you get packed full of good for you stuff. My smoothies don’t have tons of crap in them. No yogurt or milk etc. My typical smoothie is a bunch of fresh spinach leaves, 1/2 a cup of fruit (low sugar like strawberries, blackberries etc) Then I add Chia seeds and filtered water. I add some carrots and cucumbers at times also.

No Pre Packaged Junk: I am no doctor, but of the opinion that a lot of that pre-packaged keto stuff just has a lot of fake crap, so I try to avoid them in general. I do have mixed nuts and pistachio’s around. But lots of the sugar free products available are full of fake crap and pretty pricey as well. Cook food instead. I know what it’s like, and I tend to panic a little when I think about what I’ll be eating for a week. I want and feel like I “need” to make sure to have snacks around. But have real stuff around, not packaged crap. Tons of good stuff for you to eat even on low carb diets.

Let’s see, I’m not counting calories myself…I shouldn’t really have to with how I’m eating, but if weight doesn’t come off then I’ll go back and tune in closer. I’m attempting to do intermittent fasting, but the 16/8 schedule is a little rough on me. I’m doing 14/10 which I’ve read is “okay” as a start…but should try working up to 16/8. To be honest, this is tricky for me and I’m not doing a good job at it so far. I tend to be a night owl, so if I’m up eating a snack at 11pm, that means no breakfast for me until 9am. I have a morning job and need my coffee  So I’m up at 7am weekdays, most likely breaking my fast with just the sugar free creamer in my coffee. Will need to work on this though.

So here’s where I’m starting 🙂
